Reviewing and attaching these record hints helps improve the overall accuracy of the FamilySearch Family Tree. The people in the hints might not have a direct connection to your own family line, but by reviewing and attaching the records, you help create a more reliable and inspiring resource for everyone who uses the tree to explore their family history.

Attaching records to names in the FamilySearch Family Tree provides evidence for the information in the tree. Records help confirm details like birth, marriage, or death dates as well as the locations where these events took place. Attached records also make it easier to resolve conflicting information that other users have questions about.

In short, by attaching records, you help create a well-documented and trustworthy resource for everyone to use and explore with confidence.

When the Source Linker opens, you see 2 columns. On the left is information from the historical record. On the right is information from Family Tree.

1. If the information in the historical record matches the person on the right, click Compare.
2. Click Add to add the new information to the person. If you see errors in the added data, you can make corrections.
3. Enter an explanation to help other users recognize the match, and click Attach.

The most likely reason you can’t see a country or sub-region in the drop-down menu is that the system providing hints currently doesn’t have any associated with that location. New hints are added regularly, so this could change in the future.

The hints in this activity aren't guaranteed to match, which is why we need help reviewing them. Still, they are the highest quality hints for the location you selected.

If you’re certain the record doesn’t match, you can click Dismiss Hint, and the hint will no longer be associated with that person. You don’t need to do this however, especially if you're unsure. Simply skipping the hint and trying another one is a perfectly acceptable option.

Attach a record when multiple details in the record match the information already in the tree. Key details to consider include names, dates, places, and family relationships—these can be found in both the record and the tree entry.

As a general rule, try to find at least three matching details, such as the name, date of birth, and place of birth, before attaching a record.
