Origin Stories

Originating from the Ying surname, it belongs to the category of surnames derived from state names. There are three theories: 1. The distant ancestor can be traced back to Boyi, the leader of the Dongyi tribe during the reign of Emperor Shun. Boyi was bestowed the surname Ying by Emperor Shun for his meritorious service in controlling floods. Among his descendants were people with the surname Huang, who established the State of Huang in present-day Huangchuan, Henan, around the end of the Shang Dynasty and the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the State of Chu dominated, and only the States of Huang and Sui dared to resist it. In 648 BC, the State of Huang was destroyed by the State of Chu. After the fall of the State of Huang, its descendants adopted the name of the state as their surname.

Originating from an official position, this surname is derived from an official title. There are two explanations: 1. From Huanglongshi, a subordinate official of Fuxi in ancient times. Huanglongshi, also known as Huanglong, Huangshi, Huangzhongguan, Longshi, etc., was an official title established by Fuxi, in charge of palace affairs. Some of Huanglongshi's descendants adopted his official title as their surname, becoming the Huanglong clan, which was later simplified to the single surnames Huang or Long. 2. From Huangyun, a subordinate official of the Yellow Emperor in ancient times. Huangyun was an official title established by the Yellow Emperor, in charge of palace affairs. Some of Huangyun's descendants adopted his official title as their surname, becoming the Huangyun clan, which was later simplified to the single surnames Huang or Yun.

Originating from ethnic minorities changing their surnames: 1. Other Han surnames changed to Huang: In ancient times, the characters "Huang" and "Wang" were pronounced the same, so some people with the surname Wang changed their surname to Huang. There were also other reasons for changing the surname to Huang, such as those with the surnames Lu, Wu, Wu, and Jin. 2. Hui people changed their surname to Huang: The Huang surname among the Hui people today originated from a small number of Hui people of the Pu clan who changed their surname to Huang to avoid the persecution of the Semu people at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. 3. Manchu people changed their surname to Huang: The Manchu Wu Zhala clan originated in Ningguta (now Ning'an, Heilongjiang Province). They were numerous, and their descendants branched into four Han surnames: Huang, Zi, Hong, and Bai.
