Origin Stories

Originating from the Ji surname, it comes from Guo Zhong, the uncle of King Wu of Zhou, and belongs to the category of surnames derived from fiefdom names. During the Western Zhou Dynasty, King Wu enfeoffed his uncle Guo Zhong in Western Guo (the characters "Guo" and "郭" were interchangeable). When King Ping of Zhou moved the capital eastward, Western Guo moved to Henan and was renamed Southern Guo, which was destroyed by Jin during the Spring and Autumn Period. The people who remained in the original Western Guo were historically known as Lesser Guo, which was also destroyed by Qin during the Spring and Autumn Period. King Wu of Zhou enfeoffed another uncle of his, Guo Shu, in Eastern Guo, located north of present-day Xingyang, Henan. After King Ping of Zhou moved the capital eastward, he gave the territory of Eastern Guo to the State of Zheng, which had contributed to the eastward relocation. Guo Xu of Eastern Guo moved north to Pinglu in Shanxi, historically known as Northern Guo, which was later destroyed by Jin. Their descendants migrated to Yangqu, north of Taiyuan, and became known as the Duke of Guo. The descendants of the four Guo states and the Duke of Guo all used "Guo" as their surname, and the descendants of the Duke of Guo formed the main branch of the Guo surname.

The surname Ren originated from the descendants of Yu Guo, son of the Yellow Emperor, and is a surname derived from the name of a state. The Yellow Emperor enfeoffed his son Yu Guo in the land of Ren. The Ren clan was one of the twelve important clans during the Yellow Emperor's era, located in the Shandong and Henan region. Their leader was Yu Guo, the progenitor of the Ren surname. Yu Guo's descendants established the state of Guo during the Xia Dynasty, and the Zhongshan Guo clan originated from this ancient state.

Originating from a place name, this surname is derived from the place of residence. "Guo" means outer city wall, referring to an outer wall built around an existing city wall in ancient times. People living in the outer city wall adopted "Guo" as their surname. Some also used surnames based on their location within the outer city wall, such as Dongguo (East Guo), Nanguo (South Guo), Xiguo (West Guo), and Beiguo (North Guo). Most of their descendants later adopted the single surname "Guo." This type of Guo surname primarily originated in the northern regions during the pre-Qin period, and its clan origin and surname affiliation are unclear.

Originating from the Sinicization and surname adoption of ethnic minorities. 1. Hui Nationality: The ancestor of the Hui people with the surname Guo was Ibn Qus de Guanggong Nam, a Persian from the Western Regions, whose Han name was Guo Guangde. "Qus" and "Guo" are homophones, which is the origin of the Hui people's Han surname. Most Hui people in Quanzhou and Hui'an, as well as those with the surname Guo who have migrated to other places, are descendants of Guo Guangde. 2. Mongolian Nationality: According to historical records such as the *Qing Dynasty General History: Clan Records: Mongolian Eight Banners Surnames*, the Mongolian clans of Gorlos, Gorloth, and Guoqili all adopted the surname Guo through Sinicization. 3. Manchu: According to the "General History of the Qing Dynasty: Clan Records: Surnames of the Eight Banners of Mongolia", the Manchu Guo Han clan originated from the Guiyikun tribe of the Jurchen people during the Jin Dynasty. The name means "hook" and they lived in the Heilongjiang River basin. It is one of the oldest Manchu surnames, and all the Han surnames they adopted were Guo. Other Manchu surnames include Guojia, Guoleben, Tuolejia, and Guoqili.
