Origin Stories

Originating from the Ji surname: 1. Descended from Hui, a grandson of the ancient Yellow Emperor. His surname originated from his official title. Hui held the position of "Gongzheng," overseeing the manufacture of bows and arrows. He began making bows and arrows after observing the star Zhang (Zhang is one of the twenty-eight constellations in ancient China, shaped like a drawn bow), hence the surname Zhang (Zhang means drawing a bow and pulling an arrow). This branch of the Zhang surname originated in Qingyang (present-day Qinghe County, Hebei Province) and is known as the Qinghe Zhang clan. There is a saying that "all Zhang surnames under heaven originate from Qinghe." 2. Descended from the descendants of the Yellow Emperor's Ji surname, their surname was derived from their courtesy name. During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a high-ranking official in the State of Jin named Jie Zhang, whose courtesy name was Zhang Hou. His descendants adopted his courtesy name as their surname, becoming the Zhang clan.

Originating from surname changes: 1. From the Nie surname. Zhang Liao, a famous general of the Wei Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period, was originally surnamed Nie. His family changed their surname to Zhang to avoid enemies, and his descendants adopted Zhang as their surname. 2. From bestowed surname. Long You Na, a chieftain of the Nanman tribe who lived in Yunnan for generations, was bestowed the surname Zhang by Zhuge Liang, the prime minister of the Shu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period. His descendants then adopted Zhang as their surname. 3. From the ancient Xi tribe. A Xi man named Zhang Zhongzhi lived in Fanyang. Because of his skill in horsemanship and archery, he was adopted by Zhang Suogao, the garrison commander of Fanyang, and took his adoptive father's surname, Zhang. Later, Zhang Zhongzhi made many military achievements, rose to the position of Minister of Rites, and was enfeoffed as Duke of Zhao. 4. From surname changes by ethnic minorities. In ancient times, some ethnic minorities such as the Wuhuan, Jurchen, Jie, Xianbei, Xiongnu, and Khitan adopted the surname Zhang. Today, people from over a dozen Manchu ethnic groups, including the Achang, Naxi, Lisu, Yao, Zhuang, Li, Gaoshan, Tibetan, as well as clans such as Hesheli, Zhalali, Zhangjia, Zhangjin, Zakuta, and Aiyi, have also adopted the surname Zhang.
