Originating from the Zi surname. 1. Descendants of Cheng Tang, a ruler of the Shang Dynasty. Cheng Tang, also known as Tian Yi, had a branch of descendants who combined the Shang surname "Zi" with the "Yi" from Cheng Tang's name to form the surname "Kong," thus becoming the Zi-surname Kong clan. 2. Descendants of Kong Fu Jia, the Sima (military officer) of the State of Song. In the early Western Zhou Dynasty, Wei Zi Qi, a descendant of Cheng Tang, was enfeoffed in the State of Song. After Wei Zi Qi's death, his younger brother, Song Wei Zhong, succeeded him. Kong Fu Jia, the ninth-generation descendant of Wei Zhong, was the Grand Sima of the State of Song. He suffered persecution, and his descendants fled to the State of Lu, adopting the "Kong" from his name as their surname, also becoming the Zi-surname Kong clan. Kong Fu Jia's sixth-generation descendant was Confucius.
Originating from the Ji surname. 1. Descended from Ji Kongkui, a high-ranking official of the State of Wei during the Spring and Autumn Period, taking his name as their surname. During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a high-ranking official in the State of Wei named Ji Kongkui. Some of his descendants adopted the character "Kong" from his name as their surname, becoming the Kong clan. 2. Descended from Ji Kongzhang, a descendant of Duke Mu of Zheng during the Spring and Autumn Period, also taking his name as their surname. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Mu of Zheng (present-day Xinzheng, Henan) had a descendant named Ji Kongzhang. Some of his descendants adopted the character "Kong" from his name as their surname, which has been passed down through generations to this day. Historically, this branch is known as the Kong clan of Zheng.
Originating from the surname Gui, it comes from Kong Ning, a high-ranking official of the State of Chen during the Spring and Autumn Period. This surname is derived from an ancestor's name. According to records such as *A Critical Examination of Ancient and Modern Surnames*, during the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a high-ranking official in the State of Chen (present-day Huaiyang, Henan) named Gui Kong Ning. Among Gui Kong Ning's descendants, some adopted the character "Kong" from their ancestor's name as their surname, becoming the Kong clan. This branch is the Chen Commandery Kong clan.
