Based on original research into burial practices in Victorian cities, this talk explores how the treatment of the dead reflected the values, identities, and struggles of the living. In Britain’s fast-growing industrial cities, burial was shaped not just by grief, but by class, religion, migration, and public health. Whether an individual was laid to rest in a family plot, a pauper’s grave, or excluded altogether, these final decisions reveal powerful stories about social status, belief systems, and community belonging. Using case studies from burial registers, newspaper inquests, and municipal records, we’ll uncover how families navigated the politics and practicalities of death in the 19th century.
