Funeral Traditions in the Victorian Era

In our day, families often spend a lot of time and money on weddings but for our Victorian Era ancestors, social prestige was all about hosting an elaborate funeral.

At the beginning of this session, you will receive a Victorian-style “funeral invitation”. During the presentation, your identity will be revealed, and you will represent a family member, undertaker, florist, “sin eater”, grave robber, or someone else.

Along the way, you will learn everything from mourning customs to mourning clothes and traditions to superstitions! Discover how families prepared their homes for a funeral, the food they ate when someone died, and even why ostrich feathers were important. You will come away from this class knowing more about the way your ancestors lived . . . and died.
