The Civil Registry in Mexico: history, documents, and genealogical information
The class will explain why a civil registry search is essential for genealogical research in Mexico from the 19th century onwards. We will address the historical context, key dates to remember, and the legal framework of the Civil Registry in Mexico. Furthermore, the class will outline the types of records, the detailed information the records contain, and the significance of civil life events of birth, marriage, and death under Mexican law. Finally, the class will examine how to identify the likely jurisdiction and where to locate relevant civil records. A list of key Spanish words will be provided on the syllabus.
Attendees would benefit from the ability to read basic Spanish text.
