With the end of the Civil War in 1865, the United States turned to mend the sectional differences that separated our nation. Known to historians as the Reconstruction Era, it lasted from 1865 to 1877 until the withdrawal of Federal Troops from the South during the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes.
