The Montefiore Censuses in the 19th Century

During the 19th century the Jewish community in Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire but not all residents had citizen status. The main resource for the Jewish population in this period is the collection of 5 census done on the behalf of Sir Moses Montefiore from 1839-1875. In certain years the Jewish communities of Alexandria, Beirut & Saida (Sidon) were included.
