So, You Discover that You Have African Ancestry Through DNA Testing

The online class will discuss two different people who discovered through DNA testing that they were part black. The first family consists of German immigrants who came to the United States shortly after the end of the Civil War. The second family is also about a German immigrant, who came to Virginia in the 1720s. A variety of genealogical sources have been used to figure out where the black ancestry came from for each family. These sources and research techniques will be discussed during the lecture. Three structures were used to figure out where to look for more source information. DNA testing results will also be discussed.
