Area Support Family History Specialist

Family history specialist missionaries share the gospel through priesthood-led family history initiatives using the many resources of FamilySearch. Family history specialists advance the work of salvation on both sides of the veil by helping members find, document, and prepare information needed for the administering of sacred temple ordinances on behalf of their kindred dead.

Family history specialists also reach out to those who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, reactivate and rescue members who do not attend Church, retain new converts, and strengthen youth and young single adults in wards, branches, districts, and stakes. They may serve in a Church-supported FamilySearch Center.

Time Commitment: Senior missionaries typically serve 40 or more hours per week for at least one year. Area support opportunities are generally outside of the United States.

Skills Needed: Desired skills and experience include a love for the gospel of Jesus Christ, basic computer skills, customer service proficiency, enthusiasm for family history and temple work, and willingness to learn and teach current and new FamilySearch technologies. Family history and genealogy expertise is not required, but missionaries should be willing to teach in a variety of settings, such as homes, offices, libraries, schools, and church buildings.
