FamilySearch Places Research
Purpose
Our FamilySearch service missionaries research places (for example: cities, villages, cemeteries) around the world to improve the coverage and quality of FamilySearch Places – a vast collection of standardized place descriptions that is integral to providing shared meaning around places. These standardized place descriptions are used in FamilySearch Family Tree to describe events in our ancestors’ lives. The place descriptions are also vital to describing and providing searchable records. Standardized place descriptions help immensely with research, hinting, and uniquely identifying people and events. In this way our missionaries virtually, or perhaps literally, enable inspiring journeys that bring joy to all people as they discover, gather, and connect their family—past, present, and future.
